LOTR fun

Posted by admin

If you're like me, you like to watch these movies again and again. Unfortunately, this takes quite a bit of time. But, no more! Here are two short summations of the movies which can be easily enjoyed in just a fraction of the time. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Time for a new contract

Posted by admin

Well, it looks like this contract will be winding down at the end of May so I'm officially in the hunt for the next gig. If you know anyone who needs a java developer, please drop me a line. If it's not local to Denver, it'd need to allow for a fair bit of remote work. I have a daughter who is almost a year and a half old and I don't relish the thought of being gone all week for months on end. On the flip side, I know of a contract in Atlanta doing some hibernate work if anybody's interested.

Microsoft and Porn

Posted by admin

I'm not the biggest Microsoft fan in the world. I dislike some of their practices and software. But at the end of the day, they're a company doing what companies do. They're just better and more aggressive than some others. But I have to give them credit for this. I read about this a year or so ago and was so thrilled to see them doing this. But now apparently the software is "done" and they've chosen to release it under some form of an open source license. (The article doesn't mention what license.) Microsoft may or may not have "wronged" a lot of people on its way to its current position, but just shows that there are decent people at Microsoft despite the rumors and accusations to the contrary. Good job, Bill.

Linux 2.6.11 and ALSA

Posted by admin

After a series of upgrades, I found myself without sound on my laptop. I've always found ALSA to be a bit quirky, but this was getting annoying. After fiddling with various kernel options, I remembered I could actually google for the answer. I saw this forum post. In 20 seconds I had sound again. I don't know why those settings should matter, but apparently they do. So now I'm back to grooving to my mp3s while I code. Life is happy again. Just another reason I need to upgrade to a powerbook.
