I haven't heard anything in a while either. The closest thing I've seen to an ME app store would be the mini one that my phone carrier has for the not so smart phone I use. :)

It's been a while since anyone at Sun briefed me on the ME marketplace. All I see on TV is ads for iPhone and Android (and many more Android ones at that.) How many handsets run ME? What organizations are making money on ME apps? Is there an ME appstore?

I really agree with you. For me, JavaME specifications are great especially concerning security aspects, without lack of features (2d, 3d, positioning...). Just look at JBenchmark tests !
I'm disappointed too that Apple and Google does not support it probably because of royalities. Even non-symbian Nokia like my N900 does not have JavaME included.
As a service provider, that is a non comfortable situation: an application for mobile must be written and tested for JavaME, iPhone (ObjectiveC), Android (Java like)... and maybe others like MeeGo (C++ Qt), Bada and publish on there respective "stores". Just head-ackes and costs !!
