With glassfish and grizzly, you can actually write a ProtocolFilter to implement a new protocol. That's not portable across appservers, of course, but is one option. It's funny that you should mention the protocol bit, though, because I'm hoping to write a websockets/JMX tunnel in the next few weeks as the API settles down and as I have time between my glassfish/grizzly duties. I'm not sure how feasible it would be to write such a beast but I'm going to try and see. Who knows? It might actually work. :)

I just stumbled over your site ... WebSockets would force Appserver vendors to make it easier to support more protocols. Currently, there are only two two common ways of integrating "third party protocols" or a custom one - JCA and the introduction of an ESB. While there are not much open and free JCA implementations/documentation out there for the latest version 1.6 of, there are a few more binding components... nevertheless, sometimes, you just want an easy way of integration and not spending a few days by reading the JSRs... WebSockets, maybe the next big thing!
