Can't agree more. Eclipse 'save action' and 'clean up' has been very helpful to clean up the code to some extent, especially everyone uses the same 'clean up on save' configuration.

We use that in glassfish actually with special permission needed to check in pom changes. That works relatively well, though you could end up twiddling your thumbs waiting for approval. But it has come some things that would've otherwise just mucked things up.

I had actually meant to mention such things as commit/build checks for style guides. I've actually thought about implementing such things but for existing projects that can be problematic as the scale of "failing" code could be quite high. I like the idea of a build failing, though. That could be run as a separate job that wouldn't necessarily scuttle the "real" build but still provide some feedback. I'll have to see if something like that exists for hudson...

Couple of thoughts:

Library enforcement - I'm a fan of using maven pom's (please don't cringe) to enforce library versions used across the many projects of a single team or large group.

Style - Make something like checkstyle actually fail a build if there are commits that don't conform to basic rules like you highlighted (e.g. star imports).
